I'm still not clear about the goals of all this circus. Update: OAuth2 is available in Thunderbird 38, with further fixes in later releases, and bug 849540 has been closed. Outgoing: SMTP 465 SSL/TLS (three boxes to fill-in SMTP is fixed). Update 2: as of 2018, Google double downs by sending messages to invite disabling "less secure" access: Secunia's Vulnerability Report: Mozilla Thunderbird 24.x (where is 31?) says «Unpatched 11% (1 of 9 Secunia advisories) The most severe unpatched Secunia advisory affecting Mozilla Thunderbird 24.x, with all vendor patches applied, is rated Highly critical», apparently SA59803. Why does Google say Thunderbird "does not support the latest security standards"? Is Google trying to say that standard protocols like IMAP, SMTP and POP3 are "less secure" ways to access a mailbox? Are they trying to say that the use users make of that software puts their accounts at risk? Or what? non secure account switch ("Allow less secure apps"). Google then offers an all-or-nothing secure vs. Standards include Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security When you're done, click Save Changes.I've never had problems using Gmail with Thunderbird yet, but while trying to use a free software client for Google Talk/Chat/Hangout I've discovered that, according to Google's document on "less secure apps": As another example, a Gmail account is configured as follows: Server Name: Port. Either edit that entry or add a new entry. There may be an entry in the resulting list that was created when you entered your account details. If your ISP mail account uses IMAP, simply click Enable IMAP. In the Account Settings dialog, in the left pane, select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the bottom of the list. In the drop-down menu to the left of "When messages are accessed with POP," you can choose to keep the messages in your Gmail inbox, archive them automatically, or delete them.
If your ISP uses POP3, choose Enable POP for all mail if you want to see all your current Gmail messages in your desktop mail app, or Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on if you want to keep your existing Gmail stuff where it is and get only new messages forwarded to your mail program.
Start by logging into Gmail, clicking the Settings link in the top-left corner, and selecting Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Open your Thunderbird email client application. My suggestion, not knowing how the IEEE setup is, would be to use normal gmail settings, include the IEEE id, omit password. Lots of people prefer the sorting, contact lists, and other features of their client mail program, so today I'm going to turn things around and tell you how to forward mail sent to your Gmail address in the Outlook or Thunderbird inbox for your ISP mail account. Maybe if you post a screenshot of your settings for incoming and outgoing servers,some ideas will surface.
